Nigel Goodall, jeden z popredných britských celebritných životopiscov, v biografii Benedict Cumberbatch opisuje život jedného z najlepších hercov svojej generácie, od detstva až po posledné filmy, ktoré vyšli v roku 2014 – Hobit či Kód Enigmy („The Imitation Game“). Okrem celej jeho divadelnej a filmovej kariéry nahliadneme aj do jeho súkromného života. Tohto herca, ktorému rola Sherlocka Holmesa v seriáli televízie BBC spustila telefonáty z Hollywoodu, lepšie spoznáme aj vďaka fotkám, ktoré v tejto knihe nájdeme.

Môj názor na knihu:

Knihu som vyhrala ako prvú cenu v giveaway na Twitteri mojej (dovolím si tvrdiť) dobrej kamarátky Anne Mari (@LirbesOlerybes), za čo by som sa jej chcela ešte raz veľmi pekne poďakovať :) Toľko k tomu, ak niekto rozmýšľal, prečo má recenzia aj anglický preklad :D Nikdy predtým som takýto životopis nečítala, a keďže normálne čítam knihy z fikcie, bola som zvedavá, ako sa mi bude páčiť. Kniha ma nielenže nesklamala, ale prekvapila ma tak, že aj niekoľko dní po jej dočítaní som stále užasnutá :)

 

Kniha je, ako ste si už určite uvedomili, v anglickom jazyku. Je väčšieho formátu (približne ako staré vydanie Pána prsteňov). Pod prebalom sa skrýva tvrdá väzba, povedala by som, že kvalitnejšia, ako zvyčajne – viete, tá taká akoby látková :D Celá kniha vlastne pôsobí kvalitne.

Na začiatku je obsah, za ktorým nasleduje predhovor. Potom tu je jedenásť kapitol, medzi ktoré sú dvakrát zasadené stránky s fotkami. Nasledujú zoznamy rol z filmu, televízie, divadla a rádia, nominácie a ceny, slovník filmu (od Charlotte Rasmussen) a poznámky na konci.

Prvá kapitola vás prekvapí – Benedict má 28 rokov, kľačí na zemi v Južnej Afrike a čaká, kedy bude popravený. Lepšie by vás už autor nemohol „chytiť“ a naladiť na čítanie, ktoré bude nemenej zaujímavé ako táto epizóda života britského herca. V ďalšej kapitole sme už na začiatku, sú nám predstavení Benedictovi rodičia – Timothy Carlton a Wanda Ventham – a tiež Benedict ako chlapec. Tu autor začína mapovať jeho skúsenosti s divadlom, neskôr s televíziou a filmom. Sústredí sa najmä na predstavenie jednotlivých etáp Benedictovej práce, no tiež sa tu objavujú útržky, ktoré viac či menej zasahujú do jeho súkromného života. Goodall upozorňuje na to, že Benedict sa nestal hviezdou za jednu noc, vďaka Sherlockovi, ale že tomu predchádzali roky tvrdej práce cieľavedomého a talentovaného herca. 

 

Vzhľadom na to, že to je biografia, k postavám sa nedá veľmi čo povedať – možno len to, že Benedictovi fanúšikovia sa po prečítaní tejto knihy stanú ešte väčšími fanúšikmi, a ľudia, ktorí Benedicta poznajú len zbežne, si ho určite obľúbia :)

Autorov štýl sa číta ľahko a núti vás pokračovať, až kým nedôjdete na koniec. Skvelo pozliepal útržky z rozhovorov a článkov, ktoré tak dávajú uzavretý celok. Často teda cituje, nie len samého Benedicta, no i hercov, režisérov či ďalších ľudí, ktorí s ním boli v kontakte alebo hovoria napr. o niektorom filme. Pokiaľ ide o to, s filmami či seriálmi nás oboznámi od počiatočnej myšlienky až k celkovému prevedeniu. Zoznam filmov, ktoré si chcem pozrieť, sa vďaka tejto knihe značne predĺžil :D Ani nehovoriac o tom, keď som zistila, že Nigel Goodall napísal aj biografiu Davida Tennanta – najnovšieho na zozname mojich obľúbených hercov :D

Kniha mňa osobne veľmi zaujala, no čo viac – inšpirovala. Predtým som vedela, že Benedict Cumberbatch je výnimočný človek a herec, no po dočítaní tohto životopisu už viem len ťažko vyjadriť svoj obdiv slovami :)

Vzhľadom na to, že kniha bola v angličtine, veľakrát sa stávalo, že som niektorým slovám nerozumela – väčšinou sa však dal pochopiť celkový význam vety. Alebo odseku :D Určite si túto knihu prečítam v budúcnosti ešte raz – a už aj so slovníkom :)

Tak čo, sú tu nejakí fanúšikovia Benedicta Cumberbatcha? :)

Nigel Goodall, one of Britain’s leading celebrity biographers, in the biography Benedict Cumberbatch describes the life of one of the leading actors of his generation, from the childhood to the last movies, that were released in 2014 – The Hobbit or The Imitation Game. Beside his whole theatrical and film career, we take a look also at his private life. We’ll learn something about this actor, which role of Sherlock Holmes in the series of BBC television began calls from Holywood, also thanks to photographs, that we find in this book.

My opinion of the book:

I won this book as the first prize in a Twitter giveaway of my (I dare say) good friend Anne Mari (@LirbesOlerybes), for what I’d like to thank her very much again :) So much for that, if anyone was thinking, why does this review have an English translation :D Never before have I read a biography, and because I normally read fiction, I was curious, how I’m gonna like it. The book not only didn’t disappoint me, but it surprised me so much, that even a couple of days after I finished reading I’m still amazed :)

 

The book is, as you surely noticed, in English language. It’s of a bigger format (something like the old Slovak edition of The Lord of the Rings). Under the cover is a hardback, it’s more quality as usually, I’d said – you know, it’s sort of like from cloth :D Acutally, the whole book appears to be in high quality.

On the beginning, there’re Contents after which follows Introduction. Then there’re eleven chapters, between which are twice inserted pages with photos. Lists of film, TV, theatre and radio roles follows, Nominations and Awards, Film Glossary (by Charlotte Rasmussen) and End Notes.

The first chapter will surprise you – Benedict is 28, kneeling on the ground in South Africa and about to be executed. I guess the author couldn’t choose a better way to „catch“ you and put you in the mood for reading, which will be no less interesting than this episode from life of a British actor. In the next chapter, we’re on the beginning, we’re introduced to Benedict’s parents – Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham – and also to Benedict as a youngster. Here author starts to map his experiences with theatre,  later with television and film. He concentrates mostly on introduction of individual periods of  Benedict’s work, but also passages appear, that more or less reach into his private life. Goodall points out, that Benedict didn’t become a star overnight, thanks to Sherlock, but that years of hard work of ambitious and talented actor preceded it.

 

Considering the fact, that it’s a biography, there’s not really much to tell about the characters in it – maybe just that Benedict’s fans will become even greater fans after reading this book and people, that know Benedict only superficially, will definitely get to like him :)

Author’s style is easy to read and it forces you to continue, until the very end. He greatly mixed snatches of interviews and articles, that give you a closed complex in the end. So, he quotes often, not only Benedict himself, but also actors, directors or other people, that came in contact with him or speak about, for example, a film. About that: author will familiarise you with films or series from the first idea to the overall result. My „to watch list“ got way longer thanks to this book :D Not even talking about me finding out, that Nigel Goodall wrote also biography of David Tennant – the newest one on my list of favourite actors :D

The book really captured me, but what more – it inspired me. Before, I knew that Benedict Cumberbatch is an extraordinary human being and actor, but after finishig this biography, I can hardly put my admiration into words :)

Considering the fact, that the book was in English, it happened frequently, that I didn’t understand some words – but most of the time one could get the meaning of a sentence. Or a paragraph :D I definitely will read this book again in the future – and also with a dictionary :)
